Yamaha XT Scrambler, an all-terrain fury

12 December, 2019 by caferacer Leave a Comment

Yamaha XT motorcycles were very popular in their time. They were manufactured between 1984 and 2003, being designed for both road and field. Lately they start to be used a lot as a customization base. Such is the case with this Scrambler that Lord Drake Kustoms just made.

In his case, the motorcycle presented an unfortunate state, but the client knew very well what he wanted. Her dream was to bring it back to life by turning it into a Scrambler with taco wheels and where black predominated, except for the gas tank. The fork, which would go inverted and should be silver.

Fran Manen and his team of Lord Drake Kustoms soon got to work. The first thing they did was to disassemble the Yamaha XT completely. Once awake, they began with the hardest work, adapting the chassis to insert the fuel tank. These types of models have a tank with an oil plug on the upper bar of the chassis that prevents correct modification.

Once this problem was overcome, they began adapting the inverted fork to which a 19 ” wheel was put. As for the front suspension, a longer shock absorber with an air bottle was placed, instead of the standard one.

Then came a series of handmade details such as the air filter box, the turn signals on the grips, the front fender or the seat itself. But what attracts the most attention is the BMX type handlebar with the yellow lens headlight of 5.75 inches.

Finally, and as the client wanted, they were sent to paint the pieces in gloss black or textured. The exception was the fuel tank, which was chosen for a military green color.

And finally, it was time to switch on, and what better thing is that you are the ones who listen to how it sounds.

There was only to try it outside. And that was what Fran Manen did in a field outside his workshop, where we can enjoy that moment in this video.

Today, this Yamaha XT Scrambler can be seen through the streets of Algeciras (Spain) and its surroundings.

Yamaha Fazer “Sixtino“

30 October, 2019 by caferacer Leave a Comment

This time it was not a Harley, a BMW or a Triumph. It was a 1998 Yamaha Fazer, yes, a naked one from the late nineties; That was the motorcycle that Lord Drake Kustoms received from his client.

I want you to customize a motorcycle, which can be corporate and I want it to be with a 98 Yamana Fazer. ” This is what José (owner of Sixtino Design Labs) told Fran Manen of LDK.

“I loved the idea, Fran told us, and the challenge that the base was a motorcycle so little seen and those that do not use for the custom seen now, that they usually repeat the same model over and over again.”

The customer was clear that he wanted something scrambler, with taco wheels and the gas tank in matt green. From there Lord Drake Kustoms was free to choose the path he wanted.

How they did it

A job without many difficulties, which may seem simple, but that is very well done and with very special details such as the square headlight and the mask, which are those that give personality to the motorcycle and that have allowed us, in addition, flee from the boring monotony of the typical seven-inch round headlights or that of the round headlights with grid.

The rear turn signals, once the subframe was modified, were incorporated inside their tubes. The front and rear suspensions of the motorcycle were also modified to give a more stylized line to the entire project.

The military-type green tank, with the entire motorcycle in matt black, the brown seat and the detail of the light tinted in yellow has made this bike a very attractive combination that surprises everyone who sees it naturally and not through a photo, starting with its own creators who did not expect this result with a motorcycle like the Yamaha Fazer.

On the Sixtino Design Labs there is a phrase that says: “We are passionate about combining innovative ideas with designs that please the eyes.” This phrase has been the leitmotif of this project; It has been innovated using a motorcycle not very common until now in the world of customization and has been combined with a scrambler / street tracker-based design, which has resulted in a very striking and colorful motorcycle, according to the opinion of all those They have seen her.

Cream, the “crème de la crème” of Cafe Racers

21 October, 2019 by caferacer Leave a Comment

With the “Cream” the owner of Lord Drake Kustoms, Fran Manen, intended to make a cafe racer in the purest style, without the motorcycle losing the classic touch and doing at the same time something different and especially elegant … a motorcycle to attract glances.

Yamaha XS "Cream"

The Yamaha XS model

The XS arrived in our country in the eighties, with a level of advertising in the magazines of the sector that achieved the objective of opening their eyes to products arriving from Japan. The truth is that we had lost (because of import protectionism) excellent Japanese motorcycles of the sixties and seventies, but many models with these acronyms were unpublished, absolutely unknown to the vast majority, when they were originally created for internal consumption and even destined to countries like the USA One of them is the one used in this case by Fran Manen. It is a very special model, aesthetically similar to that sold in Spain with a DOHC engine, but with one less cylinder: the Yamaha XS750.

Yamaha XS "Cream"

The great exclusivity of this model is due to the configuration of its engine and its origin. He chose the Triple USA Custom model; one of the limited three-cylinder models of these XS that was only marketed in the USA and where this unit came from.

How it was made

And here the changes begin. The rear tail is made of metal – and by hand – in the image and likeness of the fuel tank, as the angles remain faithful. The rear turn signals have been embedded in the subframe bars that have been modified by losing their double seat support function, to accommodate only a single seat and single seat.

The front suspension was also shortened, to give the general line to this motorcycle, now much more in line with the cafe racer standards. The result is greater rigidity in its suspensions despite the greater rear travel with a pair of shock absorbers with separate gas tank. The new more aerodynamic driving position is achieved with a two-piece handlebar anchored directly to the suspension bottles.
